Five for Friday Pt. 25

17 Sep

1) Movies:  I have a major girlcrush on Anne Hathaway.  I don’t know why, I just do.  And no, I’ve never seen the Princess Diaries.  Please!  I have some dignity.

2) Blog Love:  I’ve actually linked to this blog before but for some reason I never started reading it.  Big Mistake! Huge!  Hyperbole and  Half is so funny I cried.  Then I started randomly e-mailing it to my friends.  I emailed it  Alot!  Oh, I mean a lot. Ck it out here.

3) Food/Blog Love:  Erica’s blog My Colombian Recipes has a recipe for EVERYTHING Colombian.  Last week she posted one of my absolute favorites.  Limonada de Coco.  I order it compulsively every time I have the opportunity. Check it out here.

4) Dance:  Dominic is a hometown dance hero and this freaky weird Clowns piece was one of the favorites on last season.  I love the moment where they pretend to twist their necks off.  Musicality! Somehow it’s macabre and fun at the same time.

5) Design: This is probably one of my all time favorite magazine house tours.  The designing firm is Ashe+Leandro and I want to copy everything.  Specially those floor pillows that look like rocks. How cool is that? And of course the white wood roof.  I’m making my case.  One blog post at a time.

I was really busy this weekend doing nothing so there are no pics today.  You’ll be relieved to know that I spent the weekend eating with my parents.  I’m sure you’ll also be shocked and delighted to know that Elian is still adorable.

To make up for being delinquent I’m offering up this insightful graphic from a new blog I’ve been visiting.

Now  I see where I’ve gone wrong.  I’m supposed to clean myself first…

Five for Friday Part. 23

3 Sep

1) Dance:  Oh So You Think you Can Dance I miss you so.  Loved this freaky Nappy Tabs Hip-Hop number.

2) Eat:  Are you jealous of my SF Big Eat Adventures?  No need to be, you can do it too.  It’s easy and Maggie from Mighty Girl even made a google map with each location marked.  She is wonderful in every way.  Ck out the map here.

3) Design:  If I ever move to rural Nebraska and live in a gigantic house for one-quarter of the price of my home here I will dedicate one room to be my dressing room.  Having a dressing room seems both unreasonable and fantastic.

4) Blog Love:  Remember Siskel and Ebert?  Did you know that Ebert got throat cancer and can’t really talk anymore?  I know.  Sad.  But… he does blog.  I love that about the internet!  Everybody has a voice on the internet!  Check his blog out here.  It’s a great repository for movie reviews and info.

5) Movies: I’ve been in a very serious imaginary relationship with Paul Rudd ever since I saw Clueless.  It’s a very healthy imaginary relationship because he’s such a great guy, always keeps me laughing.  Of course I will go support my long-time boyfriend even though he is kissing Reese Witherspoon in this movie.

1) Blog Love:  Bec over at Girls Gone Child wrote a beautiful piece about marriage and the necessity of fighting for each other.  Before this year I would’ve never understood what she wrote the way I do now.  It is breathtakingly beautiful and true.  Ck it out here.

2) Dance: Now that So You Think You Can Dance is done for the year I’m suddenly remembering all the routines I loved.  Here’s a lyrical hip-hop with Comfort and Adechike.  I love how you can feel how angry she is with herself for loving him, it’s almost uncomfortable to watch.  In this case uncomfortable=good.

3) Design:  See everybody?  It’s nice to paint wood white? All the better for snuggling up on your French sofa whilst shipping chocolate of the dense, thick variety.

4) Stuff:  Samurai Umbrellas. I know two younger brothers who will probably be receiving these for Christmas this year.  V. cool.

5) Blog Love Pt. 2:  I just started getting into PostSecret.  People mail in secrets on postcards to a website and then they get posted.  It’s voyeuristic, funny and cathartic all at once.  Love it.

20 Aug

1) Blog Love:  Que Sera Sera.  Sarah guest-blogged at Dooce a few weeks ago and she was hi-larious.  Plus she writes short posts.  Ck her out here.

2) Project:  I am obsessed with making this for our toaster oven.  Obsessed I tell you!

3) Design:  My name is MLE and I’m addicted to sparkly things.  If you are addicted too click here.

4) Design Pt. 2: I love IKEA like peanutbutter loves chocolate.  The IKEA catalog dropping is AN EVENT for me.  This weekend I’ll be lighting candles and settling down on my MALM bed to bliss out.

5) Dance:  I forgot that his was another dance that I did love from SYTYCD this season.  Everyone knows that I”m all about the freaky dances but I loved this one too.  So light and sweet.  Perfect.

Five for Friday Pt. 19

1) Blog Love:  Garance Dore is a French fashion illustrator and photographer. She blogs about her daily life in the fashion world and is silly, sweet and funny.  This week she’s been talking about how she became a fashion illustrator.  I love stories about people’s career paths and hers has been extra fun.  Check her out here

2) Stuff:  Love these cards.  Arnold and I have the humor of teenagers and we love to say this to each other.

3) Music:  I love this song so.  Remember when Hip-hop was fun? I can’t get over the lyrics.  I think my favorite line is “I use a word that don’t mean nothing like ‘lupid’”

4) Dance:  So You Think You Can Dance has been a little weird this year.  I think it’s hard because my expectations are a bit unrealistic.  I want every single dance to blow me away.  Last week Billy and Ade’s contemporary reached that bar.  It is ridiculously beautiful.  Billy’s face as he’s hanging in Ade’s arms towards the end devastates me every time.  Watch it full screen.

5) Design: Lazy summer days.  Love this collection of photos and especially the bathroom.  If you need me I”ll just be sitting in my claw-foot tub looking out my cathedral window…

 2) Blog Love: I was in SF this week, working on Forty X Forty list presenting at a conference.  I did some preliminary research on  Jonas Approved, a fun local foodie blog.  My favorite part is the little stamp he puts on stuff. Need one of those.  Anyone want to design me one?  Pro bono work of course,  I spent my per diem eating.

3) Funny: Hilarious and practical as always Maggie from Mighty Girl gives us her etiquette rules.  How I wish people would RSVP in a timely fashion.  Ck it out here.

4) Design: Mental note.  Must make hallway more over the top and sparkly.

5) Just awesome:  I heard these people talk about their vision for Solar Roadways at Sacramento’s TEDx conference a few months ago.  Inspiring.  Talk about dreaming big! Ck out their vision here.

Five for Friday Pt. 16

16 Jul

1) Funny:  Did you see the “rider” for Steve Martin’s banjo tour?  Hilarious.  Highlights include requests for “waterproof guyliner”.  Check it out here.

2) Dance:  The LXD launched last week.  The plot seems a little thin but the dancing is great.  Elian learned a lot of new moves already!

3) Design:  I love white kitchens.  Everyone I knew was vehemently against my idea to paint our cabinets white but now they all love it!  I can assume that many people will also be vehemently against my assertion that butterfly wallpaper in the kitchen is wonderful as well….. hmmmmm…

4) Movies:  Per usual I’m late to this party but we finally got around to watching the movie UP a few weeks ago.  I believe it’s the most beautiful movie I’ve seen in a long time.  I’m still thinking about it a month later.  Check out my friend Tyler’s review here

5) Blog Love:  Chez Larsson.  I don’t even know where to begin when it comes to Benita.  She is Swedish and handy and likes white slip covers and trips to NY.  I love all her DIY projects although I think they do give me the false impression that I too could build my own desk if only I had the time!

PS Today over at Raising Colombian Kids I’m talking about the secret weapon for attachment ”Teteros”.  Check it out here.

The Paris Hilton of WordPress

17 Jun

Yesterday was a pretty exciting day for me.  I was featured on the WordPress homepage which brought in a huge amount of traffic.  HUGE!  I always tell myself that hits don’t matter, that writing and blogging is something that you because you love it…all of which is true but I just got to say it… I GOT OVER 1000 hits yesterday.  On Wednesday I was INTERNET FAMOUS!

And I didn’t even have to make that sex tape I was planning.

Just kidding Mom!

So if you are new here since coming in yesterday I’d like to thank you for stopping by and give you a tour of my blog!

My name is Emily.  I call myself Notorious MLE because I was in high school when the Notorious B.I.G. was at the height of his popularity.  What’s that you say?  I don’t get the MLE part.  Sound it out…

It’s okay I can wait…

Got it?  It’s okay, try one more time and say it fast…. there you go!

I know, the cleverness of my high school friends is astounding.

Don't we look clever? I am now preparing myself for an onslaught of e-mails from high school friends indignant that I posted this picture. Oops.

Okay so that’s my name and blogging’s my game.  I blog about my family and especially my son who we recently adopted.  I blog about food, and imaginary vacations and the pickles I get myself into.  Sometimes I just post funny stuff my Dad’s says verbatim.  Like how he really needs to get off the phone with me because he has to attend to a very busy” peanut eating schedule”.

He is an endless source of blog posts.

Me and my Dad before we were internet famous. See I am already skeptical of him.

Also you should know that I am a neat freak so I have an “editorial calendar” for my blog.

Monday - I blog about my weekend.  A lot of times this is just pictures of my little boy and food.  This sounds boring but I promise you, my son’s cuteness is legend.  Please give in.  Resistance is futile.

Mommy tell them how cute I am! Don't worry sweetie, I do, every Monday.

Tuesday -I muse about my deep thoughts and contemplate life… or about shenanigans… like when my bread maker attacked me… or how lunatic the dating world is for my single friends… or… okay on Tuesday I blog about whatever the frak I feel like blogging about  on that day.

Wednesday – Okay, here’s where the “editorial” system definitely falls apart.  On Wednesday I usually blog quite randomly.  I talk about the stuff I want to do before I turn forty:  meaningful endeavors like eating my way through San Francisco.  Or sometimes I publish awesome quotes, most of which come from Mr. Rogers.  Dead serious about that last one.

Thursday – We take imaginary vacations like yesterday’s trip to Peru.  I know yesterday wasn’t Thursday.  I mean I know that now but I guess I didn’t when I scheduled that post. Kismet, no?  These posts were inspired by J. Hill’s “Places I’ve never been” poster series and the fact that my toddler seems to have eaten our vacation fund.

Friday – Is the start to the weekend so we have some freaking fun!  Every Friday I post five things I like in pop culture.  Movies, songs, blogs, whatever.  It’s my small way to give props to all the amazing things you can find on the internet.  It’s not just dancing cats people!

Sunday – A day of rest.  No words, just one picture. I’m working on becoming a better photographer.

Blogging has helped me find my voice and given me a space to share the amazing process of falling in love with my son.  I love blogging and feel grateful and privileged that you would take the time to visit me here. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you’ll come again!

XOXO-Notorious MLE

Five for Friday Pt. 10

4 Jun

1) Movies:  Amelie is hands-down my favorite movie.  Its’ director Jean-Pierre Pierre Jeunet has a new movie coming out that looks great.  Can’t wait till it comes to Sac!

2) Food:  Remember the Carrot Cake Cookies?  Well my friend Kat found a recipe for some.  God bless the internet.  You can find the recipe here.

3) Fashion/Blog Love:  I can’t get over these beautiful pictures of Emma Watson and another one of my favorite “pretty” blogs “This is Glamorous”.  Check out more here.

Love Emma Watson. Image via This is Glamorous

4) Music/Manjoyment:  I’ve been singing Good Vibrations all week ever since I heard it on Glee.    The cover of Beck’s “Loser” also rocked.  The 90s were a wonderful time good people!    Feel the vibration! C’mon, c’mon!  Feel it!  Feel it!

5) Design:  I may have been somewhat dissapointed in SATC2′s writing but I loved the set design per usual.  I have no problem moving in to Carrie and Big’s apartment.

I pretty much love it all which is surprising since my house is totally different. That may be of course because Carrie and Big are both fictional and very rich while I am real and a civil servant.
